ZERO-SUMthing Saiyuki
Hey, all-

The new ZERO-SUM came out yesterday with an 18-page "Saiyuki RELOAD" chapter, and major staff and release details on the "Saiyuki RELOAD -burial-" OVA series starting in April (a write-up is in the news section of Journey To The REST), annndo a New Year's card giveaway that includes these two RELOAD designs:

The Sanzo-ikkou ring in the New Year (that's a TV remote in Gojyo's hand; the whole story [and a nice monochrome version of the image] is in Minekura-sensei's Nitro diary).

Can't help but wonder...does youkai Hakkai have some sort of gattai thing going on with Jeep here, making Jeep green? (The kanji is the "cho" of Cho Hakkai and means "wild boar"--just in time for the Year Of The Pig, natch!)

Back to the salt mines... Hope this finds all well!

That looks so beautiful.

That Green jeep reminds me of Minekura-sensei's old artwork of an actual green jeep in dragon form.

...thanks for sharing~ *crawls back under bed*

Ohh, pretty! *______* I love how Sanzo's lying on the table (the orange-golden pattern looks great, too).
On the first look Hakkai looks like he's got wings, heh. But man, Youkai!Hakkai with jeep... excellent.
Thanks so much for sharing the eye candy! :D

Ballpark translation from Minekura-sensei's diary, preceded by a me-grump: Ahh, just what's needed- a conversation full of cultural references and untranslatable puns. Is Gojou really implying Sanzou's a medetai yatsu?

While I was drawing this picture I figured the conversation might go like this:
TV announcer: Happy New Year!
Gojou: ...enh, he said it's the new year.
Hakkai: Oh? Aah- happy new year.
Gokuu: (chomping food) ...'nyear
Sanzou: (sound asleep)
Hakkai: Sanzou's going to sleep through new year's again this year
Gojou: The monk's the happiest of us all, in one sense at least.
Gokuu: Hey, why is new year's 'happy'?
Hakkai: Good point. There's a saying- 'The pine at the gate is another step on the trip to Meido.' (At new year's Japanese houses put a pine branch by the front gate. Meido- the underworld.)
Gokuu: ...maid?
Gojou: Trip *to* Meido? I'll take a trip *with* a maid instead.
Hakkai: It's just turned new year's and already you're saying stupid things. Wake Sanzou up, please. If he sleeps here we'll never get him to bed.
Gojou: It's just turned new year's and already you're calling me stupid.
Gokuu: Saaanzou! Sanzou! (kicking him under the kotatsu)
Sanzou: nnhhh...
Gokuu: He's not waking up.
Gojou: Leave him alone. Pretty soon he'll get thirsty and wake up on his own.
Hakkai: I don't want the bother of him catching a cold. (The Japanese are convinced that sleeping in the kotatsu infallibly leads to head colds.) Here, Sanzou- wake up. Let's go to bed now- off to bed we go.
Gojou: You're treating him like some old grampa.
Sanzou: (half-asleep) Bugger off--
Gokuu: ...ya know, first thing Sanzou said last year was 'bugger off' too.
Hakkai: Then I'm sure we're in for another year just like the last.

(It's nice to draw a picture just for relaxation with all the deadlines I have.)

Thanks for the translation! I love the fact that Sanzo is such a difficult guy even when he is sleep XD. And "bugger off" is indeed an indication of what the next year is going to be like, along with a shower of bullets.

*excellent*

Thanks so much for the update. I wish i would be leaving in Tokyo for all the goodie but I am really excited about the extra info on the OVA which means I *CAN'T* miss this issue of ZS. God, I really love the Youkai Hakkai card, it is really wonderful.

Chuck and I are going to Comiket this year so we will be in Tokyo to buy the February (I think) issue of Zero Sum when it comes out. Hahaha, that makes me quite happy.

It's been too long since I've been in Japan because suddenly I couldn't remember if the kotatsu table top comes off. But of course it does. So you have the frame with the heating unit, then the blanket over the frame, then the table top over the blanket. You sit on your cushion and your legs and feet stay warm and the rest of you freezes, is why Sanzou's wearing one of those comfy wadded coats whose name I can never remember but trust me they *are* warm. (Further proof that youkai physiology is tougher than human- Sanzou's the only one who seems to need the extra warmth.)

Also if that's just a kotatsu placed on the floor and not over the kotatsu pit that some houses have, it's got to be pretty crowded under the table the way Gojou's lying. Makes you wonder how Gokuu could reach to kick Sanzou. Maybe Gojou's got his knees bent. Hmmm...

Maybe Goku's legs are bent over Gojyo's body...I mean Goku's legs shouldn't be THAT heavy, right?

[info]flemmings

Heavy or not, do you see Gojou letting Gokuu rest his legs on top of his own? It'd be worse than the back of the jeep, I'd think.

All combinations are possible in Yaoiland, of which Minekura is a leading citizen. Agreed that for me 59 lies in the outskirts of Yaoiland, a good day's journey from Canon, but still-- doable. Mh- actually I've done it myself, now I think of it.

My god- will my server let me into lj and my directories at the same time?

Anyway- yeah, kind of sweet, that. And uses the only kind of sex possible with Gokuu. I do much the same but it's a short scene surrounded by random screwing and dependent for a lot of its sense on the four preceding stories in The Four Quarters story cycle. Much work for little gain.

Oh Yes! I remember reading this fic, way back when I first 'discovered' Saiyuki. It is fantastic, with the final chapter being my favorite. Thank you for pointing it out. Now that I know more about the characters and their relationships to one another it's even better to read the second time. I need to go back and re-visit all of your Saiyuki fics again. It's been ages since I read them.

How have I missed your site for so long? I've just friended you in order not to miss another wonderful posting about Minekura sensei. Thank you!

To my delight, jpqueen has Saiyuubito, and it's also available at Japanese bookstores in other countries, such as Sasuga and Kinokuniya. It's just... wow.
